Dear Colleague: During an academic career spanning 39 years, I have read countless thesis, proposal, and journal submissions. When the quality of the writing isn't satisfactory, enormous time and effort must be spent editing and rewriting the work of students and postdocs. While participating in a recent NSF CAREER panel, I was again struck by the fact that many of these proposals from exceptionally well-qualified and creative faculty were doomed by poor execution – language, organization, and focus. Senior faculty have an obligation to mentor junior colleagues. ReviewReady strongly encourages junior faculty to take full advantage of this invaluable resource. But when appropriate assistance in paper or proposal preparation isn't available, we offer an effective option. Occasionally faculty and students find themselves at odds over the quality of a paper or thesis. Guidance committees may find it awkward to mediate such disagreements. An independent review can be helpful in calming concerns that faculty are too demanding, or that students haven't obtained sufficient results. Editors and program directors often struggle to find reviewers because of the frustration involved in reading poorly written submissions. The entire review process could be enhanced and accelerated by encouraging authors to seek editing assistance before peer review. To elevate the quality of submissions in engineering and physical sciences – minimizing unproductive faculty and peer reviewer effort, while maximizing submission success – I have joined with a group of experienced professionals to create a unique multi-level technical document service. ReviewReady has established a panel of graduate engineers and scientists to perform effective text editing, and a panel of experienced senior investigators to conduct “pre-review” of documents for organization, focus, and clarity. These services are quick, reasonable, and result in an edit with all changes marked for review and instruction. If you are interested in this service, or know of a colleague who might be, please contact us using the Contact Form. Sincerely, Principal ReviewReady, Inc. |
